Frequently Asked Questions

Below is a list of common questions, but if you can't find what you are looking for please get in touch!

The standard is that your pool water should be pumped through the filter twice every 24hours. To calculate the time required you will need the capacity of your pump in litres/hour (your pump will indicate litres/minute so multiply by 60) and the volume of water of your pool. The calculation is (Volume of water x 2) / litres/hour. Keep in mind that there is a certain amount of friction pumping the water through the pipes so the hourly figure will need to be adjusted accordingly, with longer running times. (roughly 6 to 8 hours for most residential pools)

A dirty or clogged skimmer basket restricts water flow. If water can’t flow through your skimmer, your pool can’t circulate water properly and that could cause problems, even be the cause of a costly pump replacement. The same is true of your pump basket. It can also cause your pool chlorinator not to function correctly. Clean skimmer baskets regularly and inspect for cracks, replacing if needed. If your property has a lot of trees it is a good idea to inspect the skimmer baskets more regularly.

If your pool is fitted with a media filter it is easy to read the pressure inside the filter with the pressure guage on the side of the multiport valve. If the pressure goes over 100kPa it is a good idea to backwash the filter, usually the guages are marked with green and red bands. Some cartridge filters are also fitted with pressure guages and same pressure limits applies. Cartridge filters without pressure gauges should be washed weekly as a good practice.

The function of a chlorinator cell on a saltwater system is to split the Sodium and Chlorine molecules of salt, the formed Chlorine gas can be seen in the cell as a whitish cloud The Chlorine gas is then pumped into the water, and used as a sanitiser. Sometimes during hot summer weather your pool might still require a top up of chlorine and this will depend on temperature, the load of the pool and debris going into the pool water.

The pH level should be between 7.4 and 7.6 and the total alkalinity should be between 100 -150 ppm. Pools has a tendancy to have a rising pH so you will always require pool acid to reduce the pH of your pool. This could either be HCL (Hydrochloric acid) or H2SO4 (Sulphuric acid) also known as non fuming acid.

Chlorine is used as a sanitising agent in pool water, it keeps bacteria and pathogens from reaching dangerous levels. Balancing your pool water allows for a safe and healthy swimming environment, but too much chemicals can be harmful so it is important to have this done correctly by a professional using precision equipment such as a photometer on a regular basis. Balancing water once a month is good practice but pool owners can do a simple 3-in-1 dipstick test weekly to check pH levels and chlorine levels.
